No - The &quot;cavements&quot; only date from 1868 and were dug out to create a railway station stop point to transport meat from railway trucks via hydraulic (yes - even in those early days) lifts into the then new market buildings. Previously Smithfield, which is named after the site which was known as &quot;the smooth field&quot; and was in fact an open flat space where live cattle was marketed and slaughtered nearby. This year we will celebrate the 1868 opening by holding a great banquet for 800 guests in the very avenue you have photographed so well. Best regards peter martinelli</description>
